Jim Morrison, the singer of the rock group The Doors, was foremost a poet. He wrote most lyrics of the group’s songs, and he filled notebooks with poems. In his lifetime he self-published three volumes of his poetry, and more poems were published posthumously. His collected works were edited by Frank Lisciandro and published as a single volume by Harper Design in 2021.
The 4th section is devoted to all lyrics he wrote for The Doors, and it ends with some unpublished lyrics. I selected from them the following short love poem, intended as lyrics for a song that was never recorded:
Hey Little Girl
Hey, little girl
You’re looking fine
Like to make the
Little girl mine
Won’t you come to call
Won’t you come to call
Won’t you come hon
& bring it all
I’m so upset & so alone
Won’t you come &
bring it all home
Give me a sign
Give me a sign
Give me a sign
Give me a look
Send me a book
drop me a line
Cause I’m so uptight
These simple and naive lyrics do not have the sophistication of other songs by The Doors devoted to little girls, such as “You’re Lost Little Girl” (written by Robby Krieger) and “Unhappy Girl” (written by Jim Morrison). I think thus that they represent a quick flash of poetic inspiration, and that the music of the song was never composed.
