Paul McCartney wrote the song “I Lost My Little Girl” at the age of 14 in 1956 or 1957, shortly after the death of his mother (on 31 October 1956); the song may have been unconsciously inspired by that event, but he became aware of that much later. It is one of his first songs, and the first he wrote for guitar.
McCartney began performing the song on radio, TV and in concert in 1977. A live performance was recorded in 1991, it appears in his album Unplugged (The Official Bootleg). Here is a YouTube musical video of such a live performance:
Here are the lyrics from Lyrics.com:
Well, I woke up late this morning
My head was in a whirl
Only then I realized
I lost my little girl
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Well, her clothes were not expensive
Her hair didn’t always curl
I don’t know why I love her
But I love my little girl
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Well, gather ’round people
Let me tell you the story
The very first song I wrote
Well, gather ’round people
Let me tell you the story
The very first song I wrote
I woke up late this morning
My head was in a whirl
Only then I realized
I lost my little girl
Oh, oh, oh, oh, I said
Here is another version of the song by John Lennon, recorded on 24 January 1969 during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions:
