The American rock band ZZ Top was formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas, by Billy Gibbons (guitar and vocals). By the end of that year, he was joined by Frank Beard (drums), and in 1970 by Dusty Hill (bass and vocals); the band’s membership remained then the same until Hill’s death in July 2021. Per Hill’s wishes, ZZ Top continued with Elwood Francis, the band’s long-time guitar tech, and they are still active now.

Their second studio album Rio Grande Mud, named after the Rio Grande, the river that forms the border between Mexico and Texas, was released in 1972 by the London Records label. It peaked at number 104 on the Billboard 200 in June 1972. Its first track “Francine” was also released as a single, with the album version on the A-side, and another version with the vocals re-recorded in Spanish on the B-side. This single peaked at number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song “Francine” was written by Kenny Cordray, Steve Perron and Billy Gibbons. It tells about a love affair between the singer and a girl who just turned thirteen. The “bridge” (third stanza) alludes in a humorous way to Steve Perron, one of the song’s authors, who had been in and out of prison for drug related issues: “If I ever caught her with Stevie P / I’d throw her back in the Penitentiary, now;” then it ends in nonsense: “And if I caught her with my mother’s son / I’ll call her daddy and get my gun.

Here is a musical video of the song from the official ZZ Top YouTube channel:

On that same channel, there is a 2019 remastered version. Here are the lyrics from Genius:

Francine
words & music by Kenny Cordray, Steve Perron and Billy Gibbons

Got a girl, her name’s Francine
Finest thing you ever seen
And I love her, she’s all that I want
And I need her, she’s all that I need

Francine, oh Francis, why
Do you love me and make me cry?
How I love her, she’s all that I want
How I need her, she’s all that I need

If I ever caught her with Stevie P
I’d throw her back in the Penitentiary, now
And if I caught her with my mother’s son
I’ll call her daddy and get my gun

My Francine just turned thirteen
She’s my angelic teenage queen
And I love her, she’s all that I want
And I need her, she’s all that I need

And I love her, she’s all that I want
And I need her, she’s all that I need
And I love her, she’s all that I want
And I need her, she’s all that I need
And I love her, she’s all that I want
And I need her, she’s all that I need
